Many of you will know that An Post offers a pre-paid package facility of a Sustainable Prepaid Postage Bag (large green bag).

When introduced, the bag had a maximum weight limit of 1kg.  That limit no longer applies.  The bag dimensions are 485 mm x 365 mm (19″ x 14″).  The cost is €6.  (The €6 charge does not include tracking.)   You can post your bag to anywhere in Ireland regardless of weight.  “Send any item that fits inside to anywhere in the Republic of Ireland, with no weight restrictions…”  For example, if you post a 2kg packet or parcel within Ireland and use your own packaging, it will cost you €9.  If you use an An Post prepaid postage bag, it will cost you €6.  There is no cost advantage if your package weighs 250g or less.

My understanding from my local Post Office is that using the Sustainable Prepaid Postage Bag will also attract a more favourable postage rate when sending items outside Ireland.

Sending to the USA

With effect from 29 August 2025, all goods entering the USA have taxes applied. There is no change to letters and documents, they can be sent as normal. Gifts sent via the postal system under a value of $100 or €85 can also continue to be sent as normal with no change.  It will be up to the sending country/provider to collect the taxes from the receiving customer in the USA before any goods can enter and be delivered in the USA.  See Your guide to customs charges and forms | Personal | An Post
