Planning for the future as we age may be a sensitive topic and one which we might be inclined to postpone. On the other hand, lack of planning can be to our detriment and can cause significant difficulties for our family. To outline some of the issues and options, we have asked Ms Patricia Moran of Sage Advocacy to give an information session for members on the afternoon of Tuesday 10 March 2026, in Wynn’s Hotel, 35-39 Abbey Street Lower, Dublin 1, commencing at 14:00. Tea/coffee will be served from 13:30.
Ms Moran will outline the services available from Sage, give an outline of the changes brought about by Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act and explain the approaches to Decision Making and the making of Advance Healthcare Directives and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
Sage is the National Advocacy Service for Older People. It also supports vulnerable adults and healthcare patients in certain situations where no other service is available. It responds according to a person’s needs with Information – Support – Advocacy – Safeguarding and often a combination of all these approaches. It also identifies, analyses and highlights issues which require systems changes through Systemic Advocacy.
The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act was passed in 2015 and was fully commenced in April 2023. The 2015 Act provided for the establishment of the Decision Support Service, for decision support arrangements for adults who lack capacity and for the making of Advance Healthcare Directives and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
